Legend

There is an old legend about the foundation of the village. In ancient times there were many forests and swamps in the area and there was nothing but three wooden huts that belonged to charcoal burners. In those times this god-forgotten place had no name. A young prince used to go hunting in the deep forests and one day he took a glimpse of a sow in the marsh. He set off towards it and shot his crossbow. The arrow hit the sow and it began roaring. The prince was not careful and started to sink in the mud. He shouted for help. The wounded sow was furious and ran directly towards the unhappy prince. Fortunately, Všebor, a coal burner, was working near and heard the screaming. So he grasped an axe and rushed to help the prince. He managed to hit the sow with the axe and kill it. The prince was very grateful for the help and asked what the name of the settlement was. The coal burner replied: „It has no name.“ „ So its name will be Kaliště,“ decided the prince and donated the settlement and a part of the surrounding forest to the coal burner.

The village of Kaliště is situated to the north-west of Humpolec on a plateau at 601 metres above sea level. From here, there is a nice view of the region of Vrchovina and central Bohemia as far as the legendary hill Blaník. The cadastral area of Kaliště is the watershed of the rivers Želivka and Sázava. In 1872 the main road from Humpolec to Ledeč nad Sázavou was constructed and it leads through the village.
